About Becoming Edmonton

Becoming Edmonton is a digital oral history and community cinema project by Edmonton-based filmmaker Jason Gondziola (mtset productions), in partnership with the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, and the Edmonton Multicultural Coalition.

The project is collaborative. In setting out on this project, we wanted to avoid some of the pitfalls of traditional documentary filmmaking. To put it bluntly: we didn't want to take stories from people and do whatever we pleased, so participants were given the opportunity to review and make changes to their films.

It is our hope that this project will serve as a platform to share stories from newcomers to the city. The project initially set out to work with people who had moved to Edmonton from other countries as immigrants or refugees, or who had moved to Edmonton from First Nations reservations and M├ętis Settlements. As the project evolved, other stories came to us that demanded a wider audience, so we decided to help share them. We hope that these films will inform and challenge Edmontonians to consider our city and the people who make it up.
